Nervous System Coaching Online
Full-spectrum somatic coaching, online, worldwide, one honest session at a time.
The gap between insight and change isn’t a willpower problem. It’s a whole-person problem. And you can’t think your way across it.
You already know that. You’ve probably known it for a while.
Maybe you can name your patterns while they’re happening and still can’t get them to move. Maybe something shifted, a loss, a rupture, a moment where your old way of operating stopped working, and you haven’t found your footing since. Maybe you’re so burned out by the state of the world you can barely locate yourself inside it. Maybe you’ve never had language for any of this. You just know something has to change.
All of that is a legitimate starting place.
Your limits aren’t a measure of what you’re capable of. They’re a measure of the container you’ve been living inside. This work expands that container, not by pretending the world isn’t broken, but by finding more of yourself within it. Enough to build something different.
Most coaching works from the neck up. This starts further down.
The mind matters here. But it can’t do this alone. Insight that doesn’t reach the body doesn’t hold. Understanding that doesn’t touch your nervous system, your history, your grief, your relational life, doesn’t change much. That’s not a personal failing. That’s just how humans work.
Helping your nervous system feel safe enough to change.
Not through positive thinking. Through real physiological shifts. Learning to read what your body is doing before it becomes a symptom. Building the capacity to stay present when things get hard instead of shutting down or flooding. Your exhaustion, your reactivity, your numbness, these aren’t character flaws. They’re intelligent responses to real conditions. And they can change when the conditions change.
Learning to trust what your body already knows.
Before any of this work, your body was already tracking. Already noting what felt right and what didn’t. The problem wasn’t that it wasn’t speaking. It’s that you learned to override it, to second-guess the signal, to manage the felt sense rather than follow it. Part of what we do here is restore that channel. Not so you can bypass your thinking, but so your thinking has something real to work with.
Restoring your full emotional range.
Most people don’t realize that when you shut down the feelings that feel dangerous, grief, anger, need, you also turn down the ones you actually want. Joy, aliveness, desire. The range isn’t selective. If you close off grief, you close off joy. If you suppress rage, you flatten aliveness. Expanding the container means learning to tolerate the full spectrum again, not just the acceptable parts.
Looking honestly at what shaped those conditions in the first place.
Not just your personal history, though that matters, but the larger context. The systems that profit from your disconnection. The cultural scripts that told you what kind of person you were allowed to be. The ways patriarchy, capitalism, and individualism made you smaller and more manageable. This isn’t political commentary. It’s practical information about why the container got so small and who benefited from keeping it that way.
Working with your history.
Not excavating every wound, but understanding what your nervous system learned and why. Where the patterns started making sense. What they were protecting. The parts of you that seem like the problem are usually the parts that kept you safe for a long time. We meet them with curiosity instead of contempt. That’s the only thing that actually moves them.
Building real self-compassion.
Not the Instagram kind. The ability to be honest about yourself without turning against yourself. To see your patterns clearly without making them mean something is fundamentally wrong with you. This is harder than it sounds and more important than almost anything else.
Building both kinds of connection, inward and outward, at the same time.
A lot of healing models focus only on the internal. Know yourself. Regulate yourself. Fix yourself. But humans are wired for horizontal connection too. The quality of your inner life and the quality of your relational life grow together, not in sequence. We work both. Neither waits for the other.
Reconnecting you to what you actually value and what you actually want.
Not the sanitized version. Not the version that keeps everyone comfortable. The real one. The life that would feel like yours. And figuring out what it would actually take, in practical terms, to live more of it, even inside conditions that aren’t ideal.
Learning to move toward life instead of waiting for it to find you.
A lot of stuckness isn’t resistance exactly. It’s a kind of guardedness that developed for good reasons. You stopped leaning in. Stopped being reachable. Part of this work is practicing the small movement of opening before you feel safe, rather than waiting to feel safe before you open. Safety and openness create each other. Neither comes first.
Finding how large you can grow inside this world.
The goal isn’t to wait for a better container before you take up more space. It’s to keep finding more of yourself inside the one you’re in, until what you’re building from the inside starts to look different on the outside too.
This work moves across the whole person at once.
The body
What your nervous system is doing, what it’s learned, what it’s protecting.
The mind
Pattern recognition, parts work, the beliefs running underneath the behavior.
The heart
Grief, attachment, what you needed and didn’t get, what it cost you.
The story
Your personal history, your lineage, what got handed down without being named.
The world
The systems that shaped you, the context that isn’t separate from your nervous system.
The spirit
The something-that-knows underneath all of it, whatever you want to call it, or not call it at all.
I draw on IFS, Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing, and Emotionally Focused Therapy, not as scripts but as living frameworks. Depending on what you’re carrying, our work might also touch on how body chemistry shapes nervous system states, cross-cultural and decolonial frameworks that challenge the narrow defaults most of us were handed, feminist analysis of why so many patterns we’re trying to change were installed by systems that needed us manageable, practical support for navigating life as a neurodivergent person, the somatic intelligence of theatre and embodied performance, and honest engagement with psychedelic-assisted healing.
I’m not the expert on your life. You are. I bring evidence-based tools, global and Indigenous wisdom traditions, and genuine curiosity about the full complexity of who you are, not just the part that fits inside a clinical framework.
The work moves slowly on purpose. We build capacity before we demand change. We listen to what the stuck parts are protecting before we try to move them.
You cannot shame or push your way into sustainable change. But you can, slowly, honestly, with someone in your corner, expand into more of yourself than the container you were given had room for.
You don’t need a diagnosis to start.
You need to be honest about what’s costing you, and willing, even slightly, to try something different.
Every container is different. But certain things come up consistently.
The chronic override
Learning to hear your body’s signals before they become symptoms, burnout, or collapse.
The gap between values and choices
Not because you don’t know what you value. Because your nervous system hasn’t caught up to what you know.
Shame and self-blame
The specific exhaustion of turning your patterns against yourself, and what opens up when you stop.
Relational patterns
The attachment strategies that protected you once and are costing you now.
Grief
The named kind and the kind without a funeral. The versions of yourself that didn’t make it.
Directionlessness
The particular disorientation of having outgrown who you were without yet knowing who you’re becoming.
Emotional flatness
When the range has narrowed so much that nothing quite lands. Not depression exactly.
Right-sized action
Sustainable, specific, coming from actual capacity rather than urgency or willpower.
Alignment
Not a destination. A practice of return.
You don’t need to be in crisis.
- People who feel a lot and have spent years managing it.
- People who carry a lot and have never quite had permission to put it down.
- People who don’t yet have language for what’s happening. They just know something needs to shift.
- Highly sensitive people who were told early their intensity was a problem and built entire strategies around becoming smaller, quieter, easier to be around.
- Therapists, healers, activists, and caregivers who give everything to others and have almost nothing left for themselves.
- People navigating major transitions, location, relationship, vocation, identity, trying to figure out who they are when the old structures fall away.
- People who grew up in religious or high-control environments doing the long complicated work of figuring out what they actually believe.
- People who are spiritually curious but institutionally burned.
- People who have done a lot of therapy and are ready for something that lives in the body, not just the head.
- People who have never done therapy and aren’t sure that’s what they need, just someone honest in their corner.
Is this coaching or therapy, and how do you know which you need?
Therapy is the right fit if
You’re in active crisis, managing a clinical diagnosis, processing severe or recent trauma, or need HIPAA-protected confidentiality. If that’s where you are, I’ll help you find the right clinical support, including referrals to licensed providers.
Coaching is the right fit if
You’re functional but stuck. If the patterns are clear but not moving. If you’ve done therapy and want something more embodied, more relational, more focused on building capacity for your actual life. If you’re navigating transition, burnout, grief or disconnection, and you’re stable enough to do that work.
Most people who come here know which category they’re in. If you’re not sure, that’s what the free consultation is for. We’ll figure it out together.
How nervous system coaching online actually works
We meet virtually
I work with people across the US and internationally, from wherever I happen to be in the world. My own life as a nomad, a former Peace Corps volunteer, someone who has lived and worked across five continents, shapes this work in ways I couldn’t have planned. I know what it is to be far from home and still have to find yourself.
Sessions are sixty minutes
We work at the pace your system can actually sustain, which sometimes means slower than you think you should be going.
Practice between sessions
Practices built for your real life, not your ideal one. Small experiments. Tools you can use when you’re dysregulated, not only when you’re calm.

Erica Johnson, LMFT, full-spectrum somatic coach
I became a therapist because I wanted to offer the kind of attunement I spent most of my life searching for. What I’ve learned since, through my own work, my own body, my own long process of unlearning what I was taught about myself, is that this doesn’t happen in isolation.
It happens in relationship. In being witnessed without being fixed. In discovering, slowly and more than once, that you can be seen, fully, honestly, including the parts you’ve kept hidden, and still be met.
Underneath the most defended, most exhausted version of you, there is something intact. Something waiting to be returned to. Something that knows the way home even when you’ve forgotten the address.
Your limits are not the measure of what you’re capable of. They’re the measure of the container you’ve been living inside.
This work expands the container. The rest follows.
