Modern Dating Support for Men

Nobody taught you this. That’s the whole problem.

WHERE YOU ARE

Think about what you were actually taught.

Perform confidence. Don’t show need too early. Be the prize. Don’t come on too strong but also don’t be too passive.

None of that is about connection. It’s about management. And if you’ve been trying to manage your way into something real, you already know it only gets you so far.

You’ve read things. Taken advice. Gotten guidance that contradicted the guidance before it. Be more vulnerable. Be more confident. Lead. Don’t lead. Text first. Wait.

The rules keep changing and nobody agrees on what they’re changing to. That’s not a you problem. That’s genuinely where things are right now.

The guys who figure this out aren’t the ones who got better at tactics. They’re the ones who got honest about what was actually happening inside them.

WHAT’S ACTUALLY BROKEN

The scripts were written for a world that no longer exists.

Dating is hard right now in ways that aren’t entirely personal. The apps are extractive by design. The scripts men inherited about how to show up in relationships were written for a world that no longer exists.

Most men absorbed a very specific and very limited template for how to be in relationship early enough that it doesn’t feel like a template. It just feels like self. Armor up. Don’t need too much. Lead with status. That got called strength.

You’re feeling the cost of that now. Maybe in the relationships that keep not working. Maybe in the distance you feel even when things are technically fine. Maybe in the exhaustion of performing a version of yourself you’re not sure is actually you.

WHAT’S UNDERNEATH THE PERFORMANCE

Underneath the armor, there’s someone who actually wants to be known.

Not admired. Not wanted for what he provides or how he shows up. Known.

That’s not a small thing. And it’s not weakness. It’s what genuine connection actually requires.

The question isn’t how to get better at dating. It’s how to take the mask off without losing yourself in the process. How to be open without being boundaryless. How to let someone in without handing them the controls.

That’s a different project than following better advice. And it’s the one that actually holds.

WHAT’S GETTING IN THE WAY

None of this is character failure.

Some men over-pursue when they really like someone and can’t figure out why. Some shut down after rejection in ways that feel way bigger than the situation warrants. Some keep choosing the same person with a different face. Some have been performing confidence for so long they’ve lost track of what’s underneath it.

Almost all of it is attachment patterns: ways your nervous system learned to protect you that made sense once and don’t anymore. The anxious pursuit, the avoidant withdrawal, the performance, the shutdown. These were adaptations. They’re just not serving you now.

WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS

Direct and practical. And deeper than most coaching.

Not therapy, and we move fast

This is direct and practical. But it goes deeper than most coaching because surface behavior change doesn’t hold if we don’t look at what’s driving it.

An IFS and attachment lens

In plain language: we figure out which parts of you are running the show in dating situations, where they came from, and how to actually be in charge of yourself instead of reacting from old wiring.

Your nervous system, not just your thoughts

Your nervous system is making most of the relational decisions before your brain catches up. Learning to recognize and regulate those states changes everything.

And I’ll be direct with you in ways most people in your life probably aren’t. If something you’re doing is getting in your own way, I’ll name it. Not to be harsh. Because that’s what actually helps.

WHAT WE WORK ON

Six places this work lands.

Your actual patterns

What happens when you really like someone. Where you lose yourself. What triggers the shutdown or the over-pursuit.

Presence

On a date, in a conversation, in a moment of real vulnerability. Without performing. Without managing.

The mask and what’s under it

Not tearing it off all at once. Learning what it was protecting, and building something more solid to stand on instead.

Rejection

It’s painful. It doesn’t have to be catastrophic or mean something permanent about you.

Being known

Letting someone actually see you. Which is the only way this works. And which requires knowing yourself first.

The inherited scripts

What you were taught you’re allowed to need. What showing vulnerability actually costs versus what you’ve been told it costs. What it means to be a man in relationship right now, when the old answers don’t fit anymore.

I’m integrated in LGBTQ+ community and work with men across the full spectrum of orientation and identity. You’re welcome here regardless.

WHO I AM

I’ve been in it. I know where the traps are.

I’m Erica Johnson. Therapist, coach, RPCV, former theatre kid, current nomad, and someone who has personally field-tested enough of the modern dating landscape to have strong opinions about it.

I’ve spent years sitting with people in the middle of their most confusing relational moments. Including some of my own.

My clinical training is in attachment, IFS, and somatic work. I understand why people love the way they do, where those patterns came from, and how to actually shift them rather than just name them. I also understand the particular exhaustion of being self-aware enough to watch yourself repeat them anyway.

Most of the men I’ve worked with weren’t lacking effort. They were trying plenty. The problem was never effort. It was that nobody handed them an honest map of the terrain, and the noise out there right now makes it harder, not easier, to figure out what’s actually true for you.

I’m not standing outside the jungle handing you a map. I’ve been in it. I know where the traps are. And I have a really good compass and flashlight.

IS THIS A FIT

Let’s be specific.

This is for you if

  • You keep ending up in the same relational dynamic no matter who you’re with
  • You’re coming out of a relationship or divorce and want to actually do something different this time
  • You’ve never quite figured out intimacy and you’re ready to look at why
  • You’re tired of the noise and want to understand what’s actually happening in you
  • You want to take the mask off without losing yourself in the process
  • You’re open to being seen, not just advised

This is not for you if

  • You want scripts to get more matches
  • You think the problem is entirely external
  • You want someone to tell you women are the problem

Questions

Coaching. Erica Johnson is a licensed LMFT but sessions through Affinity Pathfinder are coaching sessions and do not constitute a therapeutic relationship.

No. Erica is integrated in LGBTQ+ community and works with men across the full spectrum of orientation and identity.

Attachment-based coaching looks at the relational patterns your nervous system developed early in life and how they’re showing up in your dating life now. Anxious pursuit, avoidant withdrawal, shutdown after rejection: these are attachment responses, not character flaws. Understanding them is how you actually change them.

Most dating coaching for men focuses on tactics, scripts, and confidence performance. This work focuses on what’s actually driving your patterns: your nervous system, your attachment history, and the inherited scripts about masculinity and relationship that most men absorbed so early they don’t recognize them as scripts.
